Grinnell netters complete weekend sweep with 9-0 win over Ripon

GRINNELL, Iowa - Three weekend tests turned into a perfect sweep for the Grinnell College women's tennis team.

After posting consecutive 9-0 wins on Saturday, the Pioneers added a 9-0 shutout of Ripon College Sunday at the Grinnell College Tennis Complex. The Pioneers improved to 3-0 overall and in the Midwest Conference with the wins.

Grinnell, which has won 31 of its last 32 MWC matches dating back to 2015, swept doubles to start the day. Ali Hickey '21 and Abby Nielsen '21 won 8-3 at No. 1 and Izzy Green '22 and Brenda Guan '20 won 8-2 at No. 2. Grinnell won the No. 3 division by default.

In singles, the Pioneers got wins from Sabrina Tang '23 (6-0, 6-0), Sophia de los Reyes '23 (6-1, 6-0), Emma Gaydos '22 (6-2, 6-0) and Mamie Sevier '23 (6-0, 6-1). Nos. 5 and 6 were default wins for Grinnell.

During the weekend, Nielsen moved up to ninth on Grinnell's career singles chart with 51 wins. She and Guan also rank 18th for career doubles wins with 47 apiece.

The Pioneers are at home again next Saturday, facing Beloit College at 9 a.m. and then facing a key MWC test against Lake Forest College at 3 p.m.
