Grinnell baseball team opens season with pair of tough losses to Buena Vista

TOPEKA, Kan. - Grinnell College's baseball squad kicked off its 2020 campaign with a tall task Saturday, facing a team that is receiving votes for the national rankings and already had three games under its belt.

The Pioneers put up a great fight in their debut, losing 15-7 in the opening game and 9-3 in the nightcap.

Brock Weirather '21, solely a pitcher his first two years as a Pioneer, made the most of his plate debut in the opener by rapping out three hits including a homer. Jared Booth '21 also had a solid game, getting two hits and a home run.

The Beavers got out to a 4-0 lead before Grinnell got on the board in the third inning on Carson Gampell's '20 sacrifice fly to left. Buena Vista tacked on two more runs for a 6-1 lead, but the Pioneers stormed back to force a 6-all tie in the fourth. Booth and Weirather blasted solo homers and Quinton McNitt '21 knocked in two runs with a single. Another run crossed the plate on an error.

The Beavers took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers completed their scoring in the sixth when Kory Czajkowski '20 scored on a wild pitch. Buena Vista put up a run in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Simon Lane '23, the second of four pitchers, was tagged with the loss.

The second game was more of a defensive battle and was a scoreless tie until the sixth when the Pioneers got on the board twice. However, Buena Vista answered with seven in the bottom of the sixth and went on to win from there.

Booth led Grinnell's offense attack with three hits and Weirather had a stellar starting pitching performance, giving up just one hit and no runs in five innings of work. Matthew Lamberty '23, the second of four Grinnell pitchers, suffered the loss.

In the sixth, Gampell's single to left scored Matthew Inaba '21. Gampell later scored on a wild pitch. The Beavers were up 9-2 after seven innings before Jack Gillespie '23 had an RBI double to right that scored Chad Koehler '20 in the ninth to bring the Pioneers within 9-3.

The same two teams meet for another doubleheader Sunday.
