Grinnell baseball team's program leader board takes a hit in win over UW-Superior

TOPEKA, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team put quite the assault on the program's all-time bests leaderboard Sunday during the second game of a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Grinnell's three homers in the first frame tied a school record for home runs in an inning, first established in 2009 against Illinois College. Grinnell had five homers in the game, which ranks second in program history, and 33 total bases, which ranks sixth.

The 14-11 come-from-behind win was especially sparked by Carson Gampell '20 and Chad Koehler '20. Koehler and Gampell each homered twice, which is tied for fifth-best in Grinnell history. Koehler's homers were the first of his collegiate career.

Gampell's 11 total bases and four runs scored are fifth and eighth, respectively, while Koehler's six RBIs are fifth and 10 total bases eighth.

Gampell had four of Grinnell's 14 hits in the game, while Koehler and Matthew Inaba '22 each had three.

The Pioneers (5-3) blasted out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning as Gampell belted a three-run homer to left, Jack Gillespie '23 had a round-tripper to left and Koehler blasted a two-run shot to left.

UW-Superior (2-4) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Gampell's solo homer to left in the third put Grinnell ahead 7-2. The Yellowjackets rallied, though, and went ahead 8-7 before Grinnell tied the game at 8-all on Koehler's RBI double to center in the fifth.

UW-Superior answered in the bottom of the inning for an 11-8 lead. But hope was not lost for Grinnell, as the Pioneers erupted for six runs in the sixth. Gampell had an RBI single to right, Jared Booth '21 scored on an error, Quinton McNitt '21 had an RBI single through the left side and Koehler plated three runs with a homer to left.

Ryan Chang '21, the third Grinnell pitcher, fired two innings of hitless ball and fanned three in getting the win.

UW-Superior hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win the opening game 12-10. Brock Weirather '21 had three hits for Grinnell and also homered. Riley Guieb '21 also had a round-tripper.

Grinnell went up 4-0 in the third inning when two runs scored on Weirather's single through the left side, Booth hit an RBI single up the middle and Weirather came across on a balk.

After the Yellowjackets cut the gap to 4-3, Grinnell tacked on four runs in the fourth. Inaba scored on a fielder's choice, Weirather had an RBI single to left and Booth lifted a two-run homer to left.

UW-Superior then reduced the margin to 8-6 when Gampell's RBI single through the left side in the sixth made it 9-6. UW-Superior rallied four four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Guieb tied the game at 10-all in the seventh on his solo homer to left.

During the day, Gampell moved up to fifth on Grinnell's career putouts chart with 595 and seventh in chances with 630.

Grinnell opens a three-game series against the University of the Ozarks next Saturday in Clarksville, Ark.
