Pioneers drop doubleheader to Monmouth on wild, windy day

GRINNELL, Iowa - It's only fitting a game played in wild, windy weather be equally wild.

Grinnell College fell behind Monmouth College 6-2 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, rallied to take a 9-6 lead and then saw the Fighting Scots come up with a rally of their own to win 16-12.

The Fighting Scots also won the opener at Pioneer Park 13-1 on a day that featured gusting wind that often reached up to 40 mph.

In the second-game loss, the Pioneers outhit Monmouth 17-12 with Quinton McNitt '21 collecting four hits and Brock Weirather '21 and Luke Porter '23 three each.

Grinnell got on the board in the first on Weirather's RBI double and an RBI groundout by Zeke Taylor '21. Monmouth followed with its big second inning, but the Pioneers crept back with two runs in the third on Taylor's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Gottlieb '22 to make it 6-4.

The Pioneers erupted for four runs in the fourth on RBI singles by McNitt and Taylor, a bases-loaded walk by Sean Richardson '23 and Justin Williams '24 being hit by a pitch with the bases full to make it 8-6.

The teams traded runs in the fifth, with Grinnell's coming on Porter's RBI single. The Fighting Scots went ahead to stay in the sixth with a five-run outburst to go up 12-9.

Gottlieb got one run back for the Pioneers with a homer to left in the sixth. After Monmouth went up 15-10 in the seventh, Jared Booth '21 sent a towering homer over the left-field wall to make it a four-run game. Each team scored in the ninth, with Grinnell's run coming on Porter's RBI double.

Grinnell's pitchers struck out 14 Monmouth batters in the game, a figure that ranks 10th in program history. Garrett Nasif '24 fanned nine in 4-1/3 innings of work. Additionally, Booth scored four runs in the contest which is eighth all-time at Grinnell.

Monmouth jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opener and never looked back. Grinnell's lone run came on the third on Matthew Inaba's '22 RBI single. Richardson led the Pioneers' offense with two of the team's five hits.

Grinnell is 5-5 both in the Midwest Conference South Division and overall. Monmouth moved to 11-6 in the league and 13-8 in all games. The teams square off in another doubleheader Sunday at Monmouth, starting at noon.
