Comeback magic in bottom of the 9th helps Pioneer baseball team secure split with Blueboys

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Illinois College may have rallied in the last inning to win Saturday afternoon's baseball opener, but the Grinnell College baseball team made sure the Blueboys didn't enjoy a repeat performance.

Jared Booth '21 blasted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth of the second game to turn a deficit into a lead, and the Pioneers shut down the hosts in the bottom of the frame to earn a 6-5 Midwest Conference South Division victory.

Nate Lu '21 earned the pitching win for Grinnell (7-8, 7-8 MWC South) with a perfect eighth inning and Daniel Lubelfeld '21 worked a hitless ninth for the save.

Luke Porter '23 and Matthew Inaba '22 each had two hits for Grinnell, which grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Quinton McNitt '21 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Sean Richardson '23 hit an RBI single up the middle.

The Blueboys (18-15, 15-6 MWC South) scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to go ahead. Grinnell tied it in the sixth when Justin Williams '21 plated a run on a groundout to third.

Illinois College scored a pair of runs in the seventh for a 5-3 lead. In the eighth, Williams hit an RBI single up the middle and Booth belted his game-winning homer in the ninth.

Grinnell tied the opener in the top of the ninth, but the Blueboys scored in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-4 win. The Pioneers bolted out to a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and third innings that came on Nate L'Esperance '23 RBI on a fielder's choice and Booth's solo homer.

Illinois College got a run in the third before the Pioneers made it 3-1 in the fifth when Booth plated a run on a fielder's choice. Illinois College grabbed a 4-3 lead with solo runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Booth knocked in a run when he reached on an error in the ninth, but the Blueboys scored in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

McNitt and Richardson led Grinnell's offense with two singles apiece, while Ryan Jungers '23 was the pitcher of record. McNitt was also hit by two pitches during the games, boosting his program career-leading total to 27.

The same teams meet Sunday in Grinnell, with the first pitch at Pioneer Park slated for noon.
