Grinnell women's tennis team gears up for league play with pair of big victories

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team geared up for the start of Midwest Conference play by strolling past a pair of opponents Saturday.

Grinnell (2-0) opened the day by shutting out Illinois Wesleyan University 9-0. Winning teams in doubles play were Sophia de los Reyes '23-Mira Manchanda '24 (8-2), Erin Jarvis '25-Lily Perrin '25 (8-6) and Sydney Marin '25-Kalea Martin '25 (8-1).

The Pioneers completed the shutout by winning all six singles matches, including 6-0, 6-0 shutouts by Utsah Kalra '25 at No. 3 and Jarvis at No. 4. Winning 6-1, 6-0 were Irene Agusti '24 at No. 2, Marin at No. 5 and Martin at No. 6. Ioanna Giannakou '24 earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the top spot.

Grinnell followed that up with an 8-1 win over Augustana College, a team the Pioneers hadn't beaten since 2014. Doubles wins were provided by the teams of Giannakou-Agusti (8-2), Sabrina Tang '23-Perrin (3-2, retired) and de los Reyes-Manchanda (8-1).

Manchanda and Kalra won by 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively. Tang earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top spot and de los Reyes won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Rounding out the winners was Giannakou at No. 2 by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

Grinnell has its first home action of the season Saturday when Ripon College and Lawrence University visit.
