Grinnell men see stellar hoops season come to an end at MWC Tourney

RIPON, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team saw its stellar season come to an end Friday afternoon with a 111-97 loss to Cornell College in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals.

The Pioneers led by as many as eight in the first half and were up 54-51 at intermission. Grinnell built a six-point lead in the second half before Cornell delivered the key blow, a 13-0 run, to take command for good.

All-Midwest Conference first-teamer Patrick Simms '22 finished off his Pioneer career in style, scoring 21 points. Also in double figures were Morgan Walser '22 with a career-high 17 and Aiden Gilbert '23 with 16. Walser hit 5-of-8 shots from 3-point land, and Gilbert led the team in rebounds with a career-high seven, the same total as Tommy Smith '22.

Smith also had two blocks, Dean Mazlish '23 came up with four assists and Will Bebee '22 added three steals.

After halftime, Cornell came out strong and built a 59-56 lead. That's when Grinnell went to work, as Walser drained three treys in a row to put the Pioneers ahead 65-59 with 17:28 left.

However, the Rams gradually crept back and took command. After stretching their lead to 18, Grinnell made one last rally and came within 10 when Gilbert's layup at the 1:31 mark made it 100-90.

But that's as close as it would get as Cornell improved to 18-8 while moving into the MWC Tourney title contest Saturday.

Grinnell finishes its season with a 16-9 mark.
