Grinnell wraps up trip to Rochester with hard-fought loss to perennial power Luther

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Grinnell College's softball team gave perennial power Luther College all it could handle before the Norse hung on for a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at the Rochester Dome.

Grinnell fell behind 5-1 before scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh. The Pioneers had the bases loaded when the game ended.

Grinnell (1-3) managed six hits in the game, including two from Jasmine Oda '25.

The Norse scored one run in the first, second and fifth innings to build a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Oda scored on an error.

After Luther picked up two more runs in the sixth, the Pioneers made one last push in the seventh. Taylor Durak '24 led off with a double and pinch runner Alexa Okada '24 went to third when Oda belted a ground-rule double.

Okada scored and Oda moved to third on a groundout before Kyra Killion's '24 infield single put runners on the corners. After a fielder's choice, Amanda Ramirez '23 hit a single to left to load the bases, but the runners were stranded.

Maddy O'Bryan '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Earlier in the day, the Pioneers lost 8-0 in six innings to St. Catherine University. The winners scored in just two frames, tallying three runs in the fourth inning and five in the sixth.

Grinnell managed three hits in the game, with Samantha Chu '24 getting two of those. Kathryn Vermeulen '24, Grinnell's starting pitcher, struck out one batter.

Grinnell is off until its spring break trip to Florida in three weeks.
