Grinnell softball team opens spring break slate with setbacks to Middlebury, Tufts

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Grinnell College softball team kicked off its rugged spring break slate Sunday afternoon, falling to both Middlebury College and nationally-ranked Tufts College.

After losing 8-0 to Middlebury in five innings to start the day at Legends Way, Grinnell took 10th-ranked Tufts the seven-inning duration before dropping a 7-0 decision.

Although Grinnell didn't score against Tufts, the Pioneers did threaten with runners getting in scoring position on a few occasions. In the fifth, Jasmine Oda '25 doubled and moved to third on a single by Emma Nelson '23, all with one out. However, Tufts induced two flyouts to end the frame.

In the seventh, Hannah Dykstra '25 led off with a walk and took second on Oda's walk with one out. But again Tufts got out of trouble with a strikeout and flyout.

Besides the hits by Oda and Nelson, Alexa Okada '24 added a third-inning single.

Lane Kohler '25 was the pitcher of decision for Grinnell. Maddy O'Bryan '24 took over for the final three innings and limited the Jumbos to just one run.

Earlier in the day, Middlebury scored three runs in the first inning, twice in the third and fourth and again in the fifth.

The Pioneers, 1-5 on the season, threatened in the third inning when Okado reached on an error, moved to second on a walk and stole third before being stranded.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 struck out three as Grinnell's starting pitcher.

Grinnell plays twice again Monday, taking on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 18th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
