Pioneer men stretch winning streak to 7 with another win over Fighting Scots

MONMOUTH, Ill. - One streak continued Sunday, and another came to an end.

And both of those were welcomed by the Grinnell College men's basketball team as it won twice in the last two days against Monmouth College by a 101-91 margin Sunday afternoon.

Grinnell stretched its winning streak to seven games, dating back to Jan. 8. And the victory snapped a five-game losing streak in the Fighting Scots' gym going back to 2015.

Equally important for the visitors was keeping in the thick of the Midwest Conference leaders as the Pioneers moved to 7-4 in the league and 13-6 in all games.

Patrick Simms '22 had a huge game for Grinnell, hitting 9-of-14 shots from the field while finishing with 26 points. He also had team-highs of four steals, four rebounds and a block. Simms advanced his career steals total to 115, which ranks 20th in program history.

Others in double figures for Grinnell were David Bluder '25 (13 points), Adam Phillips '23 (11) and Will Bebee '22 (10). Besides Simms, other Pioneers with four boards were Bebee, Tommy Smith '22 and Brady Vest '23.

Dean Mazlish '23 and Morgan Walser '22 added four assists each and Bebee, Garrett Wilson '25 and Smith had one block apiece.

A run midway through the first half was key to the game outcome. With Grinnell ahead 26-24 with 10:53 left, Bluder drained a 3-pointer on a fast break and added another trey after a steal by Mazlish. Smith later got a steal and converted it into a layup, putting the Pioneers ahead 34-24 with 9:31 left.

The Pioneers built upon that, leading 56-41 at halftime and cruising from there. With the loss, Monmouth fell to 2-9 in the MWC and 3-16 in all games.

Grinnell plays its final home regular-season game Wednesday when Illinois College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
