Pioneer softball bats come alive against nationally-ranked UW-Oshkosh

CLERMONT, Fla. - After being shut out in the first three games of its spring break trip to Florida, the Grinnell College softball team's bats came alive in a big way Monday afternoon.

The Pioneers rallied from a 6-0 deficit against nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, cutting the gap to a run before losing 8-5 at Legends Way.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost a 7-0 decision to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

After being limited to one hit and trailing by six runs through four innings against UW-Oshkosh, the Pioneers' offense exploded in the fifth. Jasmine Oda '25 walked, Taylor Durak '24 delivered a single through the left side and Kambria Anson '24 hit an infield single to load the bases.

Lizzy Vermeulen '24 followed with an RBI single to left and her twin, Kathryn Vermeulen '24, added a sacrifice fly to left to make it 6-3. Grinnell wasn't done, though, as Amanda Ramirez '23 sent an RBI single to left and Alexa Okada '24 belted a two-run single to left field to bring Grinnell within one.

UW-Oshkosh got some cushion with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on to improve to 7-3.

Grinnell had big hits in the opener despite not getting on the scoreboard. Samantha Chu '24 doubled to left with two out in the sixth inning and Emma Nelson '23 had a one-out triple to left in the seventh.

MIT, 2-7 on the year, led just 2-0 through four innings before pulling away with a five-run fifth inning.

Grinnell will bring a 1-7 mark into Tuesday's action against Colby College and St. Ambrose University.
