Grinnell women's tennis team kicks off spring break by netting program's first-ever win against nationally-ranked team

Results

ORLANDO, Fla. - If the Grinnell College women's tennis team was looking to make a statement on its already-successful season, the Pioneers certainly did that Monday by beating a nationally-ranked team for the first time in program history.

Grinnell toppled 37th-ranked Hope College in a 5-4 thriller at the USTA Tennis Center to improve to 13-2 on the season.

Ioanna Giannakou '24 was a two-time winner for the Pioneers, who jumped out to a 2-1 lead through doubles play with wins by the second unit of Sophia de los Reyes '23-Mira Manchanda '24 (8-5) and No. 3 squad of Giannakou-Erin Jarvis '25 (8-6).

Wins by Lily Perrin '25 at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-2) and Giannakou at No. 4 (6-4, 6-4) put the Pioneers one victory away from sealing the deal. They did exactly that when nationally-ranked Sabrina Tang '23 won a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles, rallying from a 6-4 first-set loss to take the second 6-2 and third-set tie-breaker 10-2.

Tang's win was her 40th collegiate singles victory, which ranks 19th in program history.

Grinnell is back in action Tuesday against Hamilton College.
