Grinnell softball team uses big rallies to pull off sweep of Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - It was rally time not once, but twice, for the Grinnell College softball team in Saturday's twin bill at Beloit College.

The Pioneers came back for victories in both ends of the doubleheader to bounce back from losses at Lake Forest College the day before. In the opener, Grinnell overturned a 4-2 gap to win 13-4. The Pioneers did the same in the second contest, trailing 3-1 before posting a 9-4 victory.

Amanda Ramirez '23 tied a school record in the opener with three doubles, while Kami Anson's '24 four hits rank second all-time. Ramirez also scored three runs, eighth-best in program history.

As a team, Grinnell's 20 hits rank second in program history, three sacrifice hits fifth, 27 total bases eighth and run total 10th.

Besides Anson's big hit total, Ramirez, Alexa Okada '24 and Taylor Durak '24 added three hits each.

Grinnell briefly took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the third inning as Ramirez hit an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. After Beloit went ahead, Grinnell came within 4-3 in the fifth inning on Durak's RBI single.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay with a four-run sixth inning that included a two-run single by Okada. Grinnell tacked on six runs in the seventh that featured a three-run homer to center by Mary Webb '23.

Lane Kohler '25 tossed three innings of hitless relief and struck out one to get the pitching win.

Ramirez had four hits in the second game to tie Anson for second-best in program history. Trailing through four innings, Grinnell erupted for seven runs in the fifth with Okada hitting a two-run double and Kyra Killion '24 adding a two-run single.

Each team scored one run in the sixth to account for the final score. Maddy O'Bryan '24 gave up just three hits in five innings of relief to get the win.

Grinnell improved to 11-14 overall and 5-3 in the Midwest Conference, while Beloit dipped to 8-19 in all games and 3-7 in the league. The Pioneers step out of league play Thursday when they host Simpson College in a doubleheader.
