Grinnell softball team puts on impressive performance during Strike Out Cancer Day

GRINNELL, Iowa - On a successful day raising money for the fight against cancer, the Grinnell College softball team was equally successful on the diamond.

The Pioneers swept a doubleheader against Lawrence University on Strike Out Cancer Day Saturday afternoon, posting wins of 9-1 in six innings and 8-0 in five frames at the Softball Complex.

The wins were critical to Grinnell's postseason hopes, as the Pioneers improved to 7-3 in the Midwest Conference and 13-14 overall. Lawrence dipped to 1-7 in MWC play and 3-27 overall.

Grinnell erupted for six runs in the first two innings of the opener. Samantha Chu '24 was 3-of-4 at the plate, while Amanda Ramirez '23 and Taylor Durak '24 each had two hits. Durak had five RBIs, which is fourth-best in program history, and Alexa Okada's '24 three runs scored rank eighth.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was sharp in the pitching circle, scattering four hits and striking out two.

Chu's RBI single to right-center provided Grinnell its first run in the first inning, followed by Durak's monster shot over the left-field fence that plated three runs. Lizzy Vermeulen '24 added a sacrifice fly to left to make it 5-0.

Okada scored on an error in the second to push the Pioneers ahead by six. After Lawrence scored in the sixth, the hosts ended the game via the mercy rule with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chu had an RBI single to right field and Durak finished things off with a two-run double to center field.

Maddy O'Bryan '24 offered a stellar pitching performance in the second game, giving up just one hit and striking out two. Okada and Hannah Dykstra '25 each had two hits.

Grinnell took a 3-0 lead in the first when Ramirez scored on a wild pitch and Kyra Killion '24 hit a two-run double down the left-field line. Okada hit a two-run double in the second to make it 5-0 and O'Bryan helped her cause with an RBI single through the left side in the fifth.

Dykstra added a single up the middle to plate another run in the fifth and Okada was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to end the game.

Grinnell is back at it Sunday when Ripon College visits for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
