GC softball team ties pair of school records in twin bill with Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Grinnell College opened Midwest Conference softball play on a resounding note Saturday, topping Monmouth College 7-3.

The Pioneers saw two school records tied in the second game, but a big rally by the hosts paved the way to a 7-6 Monmouth win.

In the second game, Amanda Ramirez '23 was 4-of-4 at the plate with two triples, the latter figure tying a school record. As a team, Grinnell had three triples which also tied a Pioneer mark.

Ramirez's four hits rank second all-time and her three runs scored and eight total bases are both eighth.

In the opener, Grinnell pounded out nine hits and built a 5-1 lead through two innings. Two runs scored on an error in the first inning and, in the second, Samantha Chu '24 hit an RBI double to left and Mary Webb '23 plated two runs with a single to right.

Grinnell (6-9, 1-1 MWC) added two more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center by Ramirez.

Chu and Taylor Durak '24 each had two hits to lead Grinnell. Winning pitcher Kathryn Vermeulen '24 struck out three in a complete-game victory.

The Pioneers built a 6-2 lead in the second game. Chu and Ramirez had RBI singles in each of the first two innings, Alexa Okada '24 hit an RBI single in the fourth and Chu pushed across two runs with a double to make it 5-2. Chu doubled again in the fifth to push across a run, making it 6-2.

But Monmouth (2-15, 1-1 MWC) gradually crept back and won it with one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Grinnell opens its home slate Sunday when Knox College visits. The first pitch is at 11:30 a.m.
