Pioneer softball team follows up lopsided victory with nail-biter win to sweep Ripon

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team not only stretched its winning streak to six games Sunday afternoon, but did so in opposite fashions.

The Pioneers posted their third consecutive victory via the mercy rule in the opener against Ripon College at the Grinnell Softball Complex, and then won an extra-inning thriller to finish off the sweep.

The wins were critical for the Pioneers as they remain in strong contention to qualify for the Midwest Conference Tournament. They are 9-3 in the league and 15-14 overall, while Ripon fell to 3-9 in the MWC and 5-25 in all games.

The winning run in the nine-inning second game came when Samantha Chu '24 scored on a wild pitch to secure a 6-5 win.

Alexa Okada '24 nearly hit for the cycle in the game, collecting a triple, double and single. Maddy O'Bryan earned the pitching win, giving up just one earned run in six innings of relief.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Chu had an RBI infield single in the first, Jasmine Oda '25 contributed a run-scoring single to left and Okada plated two runs with a triple to right-center in the second.

Ripon chipped away and went ahead 5-4 before Amanda Ramirez '23 had a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth inning to tie the game. That would be the last scoring until the ninth inning.

Grinnell won the opener 11-3 in six innings. Chu had three hits to spark the offense and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 struck out four in a complete-game pitching victory.

The Pioneers rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the first inning, with Taylor Durak's '24 RBI double to center highlighting the barrage. Grinnell made it 6-1 in the second with three more runs.

After the Red Hawks closed within 6-3, Chu and Durak gave the Pioneers some breathing room in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left-center and two-run homer to left-center, respectively, to make it 9-3. Chu finished things off with a two-run homer to left-center in the sixth.

Grinnell steps out of MWC play Thursday with a home doubleheader against Central College, beginning at 3 p.m.
