Grinnell women's tennis team topples UW-Eau Claire, nearly wins battle of nationally-ranked teams

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team rolled over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 7-2 Saturday and lost a thrilling 5-4 decision to Washington University of St. Louis in a battle of nationally-ranked teams.
 
Grinnell jumped to a 2-1 lead against UW-Eau Claire in doubles play, with wins coming from the top duo of Sabrina Tang '23 and Ioanna Giannakou '24 (8-2) and No. 3 team of Lily Perrin '25 and Erin Jarvis '25 (8-4).
 
The Pioneers swept the top three singles matches with Tang (6-1, 6-1), Mira Manchanda '24 (6-1, 6-3) and Giannakou (6-2, 6-2). Perrin won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Utsah Kalra '25 was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 6.
 
The 31st-ranked Pioneers gave No. 19 WashU all it could handle in the other match. The Pioneers jumped out 2-1 through doubles, as Tang and Giannakou posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 and Perrin and Jarvis won 8-2 at No. 3.
 
Tang posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles and Manchanda was victorious 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 at No. 2.
 
Tang collected her 26th singles win of the season during the day's action, second-best in program history and one off the record. She also has 48 career victories, good for 12th-best.
 
Grinnell (18-6) plays at Midland University next Saturday.
