Never-say-die attitude sparks Grinnell rally in final at-bat against Illinois College

GRINNELL, Iowa - Seeing its lengthy Midwest Conference winning streak in jeopardy, the Grinnell College softball team responded in a big way.

The Pioneers scored four runs in their final at-bat in Sunday's home opener against Illinois College to walk off with an 8-7 victory at the Softball Complex. That pushed Grinnell's league winning string to nine games.

Illinois College came back with an 11-7 win in the second game to salvage the split.

Trailing 7-4 with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener, Amanda Ramirez '23 singled to left, Alexa Okada '24 walked and Samantha Chu '24 was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Taylor Durak '24 cleared the bases with a double to left, making it 7-all. Pinch runner Hannah Dykstra '25 moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Mary Webb's '23 sacrifice fly to right, sending the Pioneers into celebration.

Grinnell had a nine-hit attack in the game, with Ramirez getting three hits and Kambria Anson '24 two. Lane Kohler '25, who fanned one batter in 2-1/3 innings of relief, earned the win.

Webb's solo homer to left, Kathryn Vermeulen's '24 sacrifice and a single through the left side by Ramirez put Grinnell ahead 3-1 in the second inning. After Illinois College tied it, Anson scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Blues strung together runs over the fifth and sixth innings to go up 7-4, setting up Grinnell's big rally.

Grinnell (18-17, 12-4 MWC) built leads of 5-0 and 7-5 in the second game before a furious Lady Blue comeback led the visitors to victory.

The game was a slugfest with 33 hits, including 13 by Grinnell. Chu and Okada each had three of those hits.

In the second inning, Anson scored on an error and Chu blasted a towering grand slam homer over the center field fence to make it 5-0. RBI singles by Okada and Webb in the fourth helped turn a 5-all tie into a 7-5 lead for Grinnell.

Illinois College (19-12, 5-3 MWC) scored four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Maddy O'Bryan '24 was the pitcher of decision for Grinnell.

Grinnell is slated to wrap up the regular season Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Simpson College.
