Chu's school-record performance helps Grinnell softball team advance in MWC Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - On the brink of elimination, Grinnell College's softball team caught fire against Monmouth College Saturday to advance to the next day's action of the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Samantha Chu '24, who earlier in the day received the league's Elite 20 award for having the highest grade point average among athletes competing in the MWC Tournament, gave an encore in the 10-4 win over Monmouth with a school-record performance.

Samantha ChuShe set a new Grinnell record for total bases in a game with 12, tied the Pioneer mark for hits and homers in a game with five and two, respectively, and tied the school record for doubles in a season with 15.

As a team against Monmouth, Grinnell's 33 total bases rank second all-time, three homers are tied for third, 18 hits are tied for eighth and 38 at-bats are tied for ninth.

All of that sent the 19-18 Pioneers into Sunday's action, where the Pioneers will face either Lake Forest College or Illinois College in a 10 a.m. elimination game.

Besides Chu's 5-for-5 performance at the plate against Monmouth, Taylor Durak '24 added three hits. Kathryn Vermeulen '24 earned the win, striking out two in four innings. Maddy O'Bryan '24 tossed no-hit ball and fanned three in the final three innings to get the save.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the first inning on Chu's solo homer. After Monmouth went up 3-1, the Pioneers tied it in the third as Mary Webb '23 hit an RBI single to left and Emma Nelson '23 scored on an error.

Monmouth got its final lead of 4-3 in the fourth, but Chu's two-run blast in the bottom of the inning made it 5-4 in favor of Grinnell. In the fifth, Chu hit an RBI double, Durak blasted a two-run homer and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 plated two runs with a double to left-center.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell erupted for four runs in the first inning before Illinois College rallied for a 10-6 victory. Amanda Ramirez '23 and Kambria Anson '24 each had two hits for Grinnell.

In the first, Durak hit an RBI double to right-center, Nelson pushed across a run with an infield single and later scored on an error and Anson had an RBI single to left.

The Lady Blues responded with seven unanswered runs. Grinnell cut it to 7-5 in the fourth on the first collegiate homer of Ramirez's career. After Illinois College scored in the fifth, Lizzy Vermeulen hit her first collegiate homer to make it an 8-6 game. But that's all the closer Grinnell could get.

Lane Kohler '25, Grinnell's starter in the circle, was the pitcher of record.
