Richter gives Grinnell first-ever MWC hammer title with school-record performance

Results

BELOIT, Wis. - Theo Richter '23 became Grinnell College's first-ever Midwest Conference champion in the men's hammer, and set a school record in the process, on the opening day of the league outdoor track and field meet Friday.

Richter unleashed a best toss of 160 feet, 10 inches on his first throw of the finals at Strong Stadium to win the event by 20 inches. His performance shatters the previous Grinnell best of 152-2 by Chad Rapp in 2005. Incidentally, Rapp had been last member of the Grinnell men's team to win a league title in a field event, doing so in the discus in 2005.

Richter's performance helped Grinnell to fifth place in the team standings after the opening day with 26.5 points. Monmouth College leads the field with 60 points.

Ben Harvey '22 and Andrew Nickeson '23 were third and fourth in the 1500-meter run in 4 minutes, 4.81 seconds and 4:05.19, respectively.

Bradley Ramsey '24 added a sixth-place finish in the 10,000 in 36:13.11 and Sterling Hollond '25 tied for sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 12-1 ½.

Grinnell had several runners advance out of Friday preliminaries into Saturday's finals. Xavier James '25 qualified third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.23 and Ryan Boev '25 qualified eighth in 1:05.03.

James also advanced to the finals of the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.09, fourth-best in the preliminaries. Aiden Gilbert '23 qualified seventh in the 400 in 51.83.
