Grinnell baseball team splits contests with Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team split games with Knox College Saturday, taking the opener 5-2 before losing the second game 13-3.

Ian Feld '25 and Evan Borberg '24 combined on an eight-hitter in the opener for Grinnell. Feld fanned seven batters in 8-2/3 innings and Borberg came in for the final out to secure the save.

Michael Flaherty '24 led the offense with two hits. Grinnell grabbed a 2-0 lead when Will Richman '22 homered in the first inning and Ethan Crawford '25 added one in the third.

In the fourth, Flaherty rapped a two-run single and Sean Richardson '24 walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-0. The Pioneers held off the Prairie Fire after that for the win.

Grinnell (11-12 Midwest Conference, 14-20 overall) was within 4-3 in the second game before Knox (5-17 MWC, 7-27) erupted for eight runs in the pivotal sixth inning.

Jonathan Gottlieb '22 had three of Grinnell's seven hits, including a solo homer in the third inning to bring Grinnell within 3-1. Richman scored on an error in the fourth and Gottlieb hit an RBI single to bring the Pioneers within 4-3, but that was all the closer they could get.

Ryan Jack '22, the first of six Grinnell hurlers, was the pitcher of record.

Grinnell wraps up its season Sunday against Knox College at Pioneer Park. Senior Day activities are slated for 11:30 a.m., with the first pitch set for noon.
