Tang secures spot in prestigious ITA Cup by advancing to Midwest Regional singles title match

Box Score ST. PETER, Minn. - For the second year in a row, Grinnell College's Sabrina Tang '23 has punched a ticket to the prestigious ITA Cup in Rome, Ga., by advancing to the singles title match at the 2022 ITA Midwest Regional Championships.

Tang moved into the championship with a pair of victories Sunday. The top seed entered Sunday's action as a quarterfinalist before defeating sixth-seeded Cassie Lee of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-1, 6-3. Tang then moved on to the title match by rallying from a 6-3 opening-set loss to third-seeded Autumn Bruno of UW-Whitewater with consecutive wins of 6-2, 6-2.

Tang will play second-seeded Kelsey Dorr of St. Catherine University for the crown.

Grinnell's Lily Perrin '25 and Erin Jarvis '25 wrapped up a successful run at the meet by advancing to the semifinals of double play. They rolled by the fourth-seeded duo of Yuki Oda and Molly Austin of Gustavus Adolphus College by an 8-5 score before losing 8-4 to second-seeded Clare Palen and Sam Fuchs of the UW-Eau Claire.

Tang and Ioanna Giannakou '24 played in the doubles quarterfinals Sunday and nearly defeated the top-seeded duo of Amela Asfaw and Mariam Nechiporuk before the Carleton College team eked out an 8-7 victory.

Grinnell players also found plenty of success in the Gustie Invite, which is held in conjunction with the Midwest Regional. Nehir Ergun '26, Sydney Marin '25 and Kalea Martin '25 won singles titles, while the duos of Marin-Ergun and Anika Sheth '26-Utsah Kalra '25 were doubles champs.
