GC women's tennis team starts on resounding note by winning Warhawk Invite title for first time in program history

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. - Grinnell College women's tennis coach Zack Hasenyager was expecting a big season for his squad in 2023-23.

The Pioneers certainly delivered on that expectation in their season opener, taking top honors in the eight-team University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational for the first time in program history Saturday.

Grinnell won three of the six division titles and finished with 41 points to beat the perennial power host school by a point.

The Pioneers had two of the three singles champs, as Irene Agusti '24 cruised to the title in the second flight and Isa Voinescu '26 won at No. 3. Grinnell also won at No. 3 doubles with the tandem of Utsah Kalra '25 and Nichole Henning '26.

As the second seed, Agusti defeated foes from Augustana (6-1, 6-1) and Luther (6-2, 6-0) before beating the top-seeded player from UW-Whitewater (6-4, 7-5).

Voinescu was the top seed at No. 3 and came through, winning 6-0, 6-2 from a player from UW-Oshkosh, 6-3, 6-0 over a foe from Luther and 7-6, 6-0 against a player from UW-Whitewater.

At No. 3 doubles, Kalra and Henning were the top seed and had little trouble. They beat a squad from Carthage 8-2, a team from UW-Eau Claire 8-3 and their foe from Luther 8-3.

Grinnell's Anika Sheth '26 and Nehir Ergun '26 placed third at No. 2 doubles, while two other Pioneer entries were fifth.
