2-decade old record takes a tumble as Pioneers get off to strong start at Grinnell Invite

GRINNELL, Iowa - Sarah Lopez '26 not only set a school record Friday morning at the Grinnell Invitational, she repeated the accomplishment in the finals session later in the day.


The Grinnell College women's swimming and diving sophomore shattered the school mark in the 200-yard butterfly at Russell K. Osgood Pool, first by swimming 2 minutes, 8.09 seconds in the prelims and following that up with a time of 2:07.05 in winning the title. The previous school mark was 2:09.34, set in 2005 by Amanda Keledjian.

Lopez added a victory in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.80, which ranks sixth all-time at Grinnell. The Pioneers' other victories Friday came from the 200 freestyle relay team of Ciara Vogler '26, Kailee Shermak '25, Sophie Juethner '26 and Sophia Carroll '25 in 1:39.69 and 400 medley relay unit of Molly Ryan '27, Genevieve Martinez '24, Lopez and Vogler in 4:01.57.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Carroll in the 500 freestyle (5:16.96), Ryan in the 100 backstroke (59.94), Vogler in the 100 freestyle (53.84), Camryn Gonzales '25 in the 200 butterfly (2:13.58) and the 800 freestyle relay team of Samantha Cook '27, Lopez, Ryan and Carroll (8:04.02).

Cook was third in the 500 freestyle in 5:19.84, while fourth went to Jenna Kollevoll '24 in the 100 backstroke (1:01.13), Carroll in the 100 freestyle (54.03, 11th all-time in program history), Natasha Zettler '27 in the 200 butterfly (2:15.62, 16th all-time) and Shermak in the 100 individual medley (1:03.24).

Placing fifth were Gonzales in the 200 individual medley (2:15.24), Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:01.49), Martinez in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.93), Shermak in the 100 freestyle (55.12) and Cook in the 200 butterfly (2:18.31). Jane Markovitz '26 placed sixth in 1-meter diving with a score of 222.75.

Also, Regan Stambaugh '26 recorded the 19th-fastest clocking in program history in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.66.

Grinnell, seeking its third title in a row, is off to a great start with 644 points and leads runner-up St. Catherine University by 210. The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
