Rhinehart's late field goal paves the way for Grinnell's first victory of the season

Pioneers score game's final 10 points to break into win column

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's football team has sniffed the win column on more than one occasion this season, only to come away empty-handed.

But the Pioneers were rewarded for their steadfastness on a sunny Saturday afternoon, as Nick Rhinehart's field goal in the waning seconds pushed the visitors to a 17-14 victory over Lawrence University at the Banta Bowl.

The victory snapped Grinnell's nine-game losing streak, which dates back to early last season, as the Pioneers improved to 1-2 in the Midwest Conference and 1-3 overall.

Grinnell has now won four games in a row over the Vikings, who fell to 0-3 in the MWC and 0-4 in all games.

The 14-point output by Lawrence is the lowest for a Grinnell foe in nearly a year, when the Pioneers limited Knox College to 14.

The Pioneers scored the game's final 10 points, highlighted by the late fourth-period drive that resulted in the game-winning field goal. Grinnell took over at its own 20-yard line following a big punt by the Vikings. Sam Eaton '27 had a big 9-yard run for a first down, and Henry Baird '25 found Rhinehart on passes of 13 and 18 yards as the visitors drove down the field.

On a fourth-and-7 play from the Vikings' 29-yard line, Baird scrambled for a first down. After three plays resulted in 7 yards, Rhinehart lined up for a field goal on the right hash. He calmly booted the 36-yard kick for the winning points.

Grinnell, which outgained Lawrence 334-301, saw Lucky Carton '27 rush for a career-high 109 yards. Baird completed 17-of-25 passes for 132 yards, and Rhinehart caught nine aerials for 80 yards. Carton added five catches and Matthew Johanson '28 had three.

Hugh Werner '25 was again Grinnell's defensive leader with eight tackles and an interception. Bert Greene '26 added seven stops and Danny Quirk '25 posted five. Ajay Griffin '27 also had a pickoff.

Grinnell, no stranger to fast starts this season, did so again by scoring on the game's opening drive. The Pioneers went 60 yards in 11 plays before Carton's 7-yard TD run and Rhinehart's extra point with 10:12 left.

The Vikings came back, though, scoring a touchdown in both the first and second quarters for a 14-7 halftime lead.

Grinnell tied the game on its first possession of the third quarter, going 61 yards in seven plays. Werner scored on a 4-yard run and Rhinehart kicked the point after.

Lawrence attempted to break the 14-all tie early in the fourth period with a field goal attempt, but Grinnell's Keaton Fitzgerald '26 broke through and blocked the kick.

Two drives later, Rhinehart kicked the game-winner.

The Pioneers are back at Rosenbloom Field next Saturday when Monmouth College visits. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
