Grinnell sets record for forced fumbles in Senior Day setback to Illinois College

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though the Grinnell College football team didn't come away with a victory on Senior Day, the Pioneers did set a new school mark.

The Pioneers forced a school-record four fumbles in a 56-14 loss to Illinois College on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.

The Blueboys erupted for a 28-0 lead by the end of the first period, but after that the Pioneers held their own.

Grinnell, who are 2-5 in the Midwest Conference and 2-6 overall, won the time of possession battle by more than 15 minutes while gaining 291 yards. The Blueboys, who raced for 647 yards, improved to 5-2 in the league and 6-2 in all games.

Sam Eaton '27 rushed for a career-high 101 yards including a 64-yard touchdown scamper to highlight Grinnell's offense. Breck Bishop '26 forced two fumbles and Hugh Werner '25 posted nine tackles on the defensive side. Werner now ranks eighth in program history for tackles with 287.

The Pioneers' first score early in the second period was set up by a Bishop sack that caused a fumble. Five plays later, Eaton broke loose on a 64-yard TD run. Nick Rhinehart '25 kicked the point after.

Illinois College led 35-7 at halftime, but the Pioneers cut into that on their first drive of the second half. Taking over following a fumble forced by TJ Lawrence '25, Grinnell went 34 yards in seven plays. Will Cloake '27 capped the drive by connecting with Garrett Wilson '25 on a 20-yard TD pass and Rhinehart kicked the point after. Rhinehart's point after gives him 50 for his career, fourth-best in Grinnell history, and his 140 total ranks eighth. Wilson has 12 TD receptions in his career, 10th-best at Grinnell.

The Blueboys went up 42-14 by the end of the period and scored twice more in the fourth quarter.

Besides Eaton's big rushing effort, Lucky Carton '27 rushed for 75 yards. Wilson had two catches for 28 yards, and Rhinehart caught three passes.

Danny Quirk '25 and Kevin Johanson '26 each had six tackles for Grinnell, while Hays Marionneaux '27, Keaton Fitzgerald '26, Adrian Stubbs '28 and Bishop each had five tackles. Johnanson also had a pickoff in the game and now ranks fifth in program history with 114 interception return yards.

Grinnell plays at the University of Chicago next Saturday.
