Grinnell football team hangs with Chicago early before falling

CHICAGO, Ill. – Grinnell College's football team hung with the University of Chicago for most of the early going, but the Maroons rallied and went on to earn a 42-6 Midwest Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

Lucky Carton '27 rushed for 61 yards and the Pioneers' lone touchdown, while Henry Baird '25 was efficient passing the ball by going 9-of-11 through the air for 78 yards. Baird's completion percentage of 81.8 percent ranks second in program history.

Carton and Nick Rhinehart '25 each had three catches for 26 and 25 yards, respectively. Rhinehart now ranks ninth in program history with 1,580 reception yards.

Bert Greene '26 was a big force on defense with nine tackles, while Will Reyes '25 had seven stops and Breck Bishop '26, Hays Marionneaux '28 and Adam Whalen '28 posted five each. Whalen also had 1.5 sacks.

Grinnell's first drive ended in a punt after Chicago had gone up 7-0. The Pioneers' second series began at the Maroons' 37-yard line. A strong dose of rushing by Carton and Marcus Sung '28 resulted in plenty of yards, as did an 11-yard pass from Baird to Ben Cerrato '25. Grinnell (2-7, 2-6 MWC) finished off the drive with a 7-yard TD rush by Carton. The extra point was blocked.

Chicago (6-3, 6-2 MWC) built its lead to 21-6 by the end of the first period and 42-6 by halftime. The Pioneers' held Chicago scoreless in the second half.
