Grinnell baseball team opens on a high note with sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - If Saturday's doubleheader season opener is an indicator, the Grinnell College baseball team can expect some great things in 2024.

Pioneer pitchers held Nebraska Wesleyan University to a .190 batting average and fanned 21 batters while Grinnell's hitter piled up 15 hits in a sweep of the Prairie Wolves. Grinnell won the opener 7-3 and followed that up with a 6-1 decision.

Grinnell put together nine hits in the opener, including two from Ethan Crawford '25. Michael Flaherty '24 added two RBIs, while starting pitcher Ian Feld '25 scattered four hits and issued just one run while fanning eight in five innings on the mound.

Cole Philpott '25 scored on an error in the first inning and Nikolas Ruden '26 hit an RBI in the fourth.

Nebraska Wesleyan cut the gap in half in the bottom of the fourth before the Pioneers scored three runs in the sixth as Ben Kelly '25 and Sean Tashjian '25 each hit RBI singles and Philpott added a sacrifice fly. Flaherty completed Grinnell's scoring in the seventh with a two-run single.

Ryan Jungers '24 closed out the win on the mound for Grinnell, tossing one-hit ball and striking out four over two innings.

In the second game, Jake Hull '24 struck out four and gave up five hits over seven innings on the mound. Jackson Gutta '27 threw hitless ball and struck out three in the final two frames.

Mac McCain '25 had three of the Pioneers' hits and Ian Brown '24 knocked in four runs, including an RBI groundout in the first.

Flaherty hit a solo homer in the fourth and Brown added a three-run shot over the fence in the seventh. McCain added an RBI double in the ninth.

The teams meet again for a single game Sunday.
