Grinnell baseball team's bats go wild in sweep of Elmhurst

Pioneers post pair of mercy-rule victories

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - After struggling to get its bats going Saturday, the Grinnell College baseball team more than made up for it Sunday with a pair of mercy-rule victories over Elmhurst University.

The Pioneers pounded out 15 hits in a 15-1, eight-inning victory in the opener. Connor Goodson '26 and Nathan McCurdy '25 led the charge with three hits apiece, while Nikolas Ruden '26, Evan Borberg '24 and Ian Brown '24 added two apiece. Brown had two doubles, a total that is tied for eighth in program history.

Jakob Runkel '26 and Ryan Jungers '24 were sharp on the mound, combining on a four-hitter. Runkel fanned 10 batters over the first four innings, while Jungers tossed four more innings of no-hit ball and struck out three to finish off the game.

Goodson's solo homer to left in the first inning opened the scoring, while an error and Ruden's RBI infield single in the second made it 3-0. In the third, Mac McCain '25 had a sacrifice fly to left and McCurdy plated a run with a triple to right field.

After Elmhurst closed within 5-1, Lucas Hadding '24 had an RBI groundout in the fifth. Grinnell put up two runs in the sixth on an RBI double to left by Goodson and McCurdy's bases-loaded walk. In the seventh, an error scored another run as Grinnell pushed its lead to 9-1.

Grinnell then exploded for six runs in the eighth inning. McCurdy had an RBI single to center, an error plated two runs, Stuart Cash '27 scored on a wild pitch and Jack Stoll '25 belted a two-run double to right.

Grinnell followed with a 13-2, seven-inning win in which McCain knocked in six runs and scored four. Those numbers are tied for fifth and eighth, respectively, in program history.

The Pioneers had nine hits in the game, with Sean Richardson '24, McCain, Josh Fournier '24 and McCurdy each getting two. Jackson Gutta '27 earned his first collegiate pitching victory, tossing a complete-game six-hitter and striking out 12.

Grinnell (5-6) opened the scoring in the second inning on Fournier's sacrifice fly to center. The Pioneers erupted for six runs in the third. Ruden had an infield RBI single, McCain pushed across two runs with a double to right and later came across on an error, McCurdy hit an RBI single to left and later scored on an error.

In the fifth, McCurdy blasted a two-run single to center to make it 9-0. Elmhurst (0-7) got two runs in the top of the sixth before McCain's grand slam homer in the bottom of the frame made it 13-2.

During the day, McCain moved up to ninth on Grinnell's career sacrifice fly list with seven and 12th on the doubles chart with 25.

The Pioneers are off until spring break and will meet Asbury University and Maryville College in Memphis, Tenn., next Saturday.
