Grinnell baseball team piles up the runs while securing series victory over Monmouth

Pioneers split with Fighting Scots on Saturday

GRINNELL, Iowa - The number "13" turned out to be more lucky than not for the Grinnell College baseball team this weekend.

The Pioneers put up 13 runs in all three games of a series with Monmouth College, winning two of those. That included a 13-6 victory in the second game of Saturday's twin bill at Pioneer Park after the Fighting Scots had won a wild 14-13 decision in the opener.

Grinnell (9-10, 2-1 Midwest Conference) pounded out 12 hits in the second game and rallied for a 5-3 deficit. Nikolas Ruden '26 went 4-for-5 at the plate, while Mac McCain '25 and Ethan Crawford '25 added two hits each. McCain had a sacrifice fly to left in the second inning and Crawford belted a two-run double to right-center. McCain now has eight career sacrifice flies, which ranks sixth in program history.

After Monmouth (10-8, 3-3 MWC) took the lead with a five-run third inning, the Pioneers got a run back in the fourth via Crawford's RBI. Monmouth went ahead 7-4 in the top of the sixth before McCain hit an RBI double to right-center in the bottom of the inning and Crawford bashed a two-run homer to tie it.

The Pioneers broke things open in the eighth with six runs, including a grand slam homer by Ian Brown '24, a run via a wild pitch and an RBI single by Joe Chanis '27. Brown now has 16 career home runs, seventh all-time at Grinnell.

Kenji Kajita '25, the last of three Grinnell pitchers, earned the win. He tossed three innings and struck out four.

The teams combined for 35 hits in the opener, with Monmouth rapping out 18 and Grinnell 17. Nathan McCurdy '25 had four hits for Grinnell and Crawford, McCain, Josh Fournier '24 and Sean Tashjian '25 added two each.

Monmouth bolted out to an 8-1 lead, with Grinnell's run coming from Crawford's solo homer in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Grinnell closed within 8-7 when Crawford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, McCain had a two-run single, Connor Goodson '26 hit a sacrifice fly and Tashjian blasted a two-run homer.

The Pioneers went ahead 12-8 in the bottom of the eighth with a five-run outburst thanks to a two-run triple by Crawford, a run on a passed ball and Goodson's two-run homer.

After Monmouth went ahead 14-12 in the ninth, Stuart Cash '27 hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game. However, the Fighting Scots held on to win.

Jackson Gutta '27 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

The Pioneers are slated to host Cornell College in a twin bill Tuesday.
