Grinnell football team comes oh, so close, to getting historical win over Ripon

RIPON, Wis. - Oh, so close.

That was the case for the Grinnell College football team, as the Pioneers nearly got their first victory over Ripon College since 2004 Saturday afternoon.

For the second week in a row, Grinnell bolted out to a nine-point halftime lead. However, Ripon rallied to secure a 23-19 victory to stretch its winning streak over the Pioneers to 15 games.

Grinnell, seeking its first victory on Ripon's turf since 1969, was tied with the hosts 7-all after one period before grabbing a 19-10 cushion heading into the locker room.

Grinnell (0-2, 0-1 Midwest Conference) won the key statistical categories, holding an 18-13 edge in first downs and outgaining Ripon (1-1, 1-0 MWC) 284-215.

Henry Baird '25 had another big game as Grinnell's quarterback, connecting on 27-of-43 passes for 249 yards and two scores. Noah Smith '27 had six catches for 86 yards and Garrett Wilson '25 had three snags for 46 yards. Nick Rhinehart '25 and Lucky Carton '27 each had TD receptions.

Hugh Werner '25 again led the defense with 13 tackles, while Peyton Williams '27 added five. Grinnell, which limited Ripon to its lowest scoring output in the series since 2005, got four tackles each from Luke Stefan '25, Kevin Johanson '26,  Hays Marionneaux '28, Bert Greene '26, Breck Bishop '26 and Travis Chu '25.

Ripon grabbed a 7-0 lead before Grinnell tied it on a 1-yard run up the middle by Marcus Sung '28 with Rhinehart providing the extra point. Sparking the series was a 21-yard pass from Baird to Wilson.

A blocked punt by Chris Reiter '27 put Grinnell in business early in the second period. Taking over at Ripon's 27-yard line, Grinnell used five plays to score. Capping the drive was a 7-yard TD pass from Baird to Carton.

Ripon turned the ball over on downs on its next drive and paid the price, as Grinnell scored on three plays. The touchdown was a 12-yard strike from Baird to Rhinehart for a 19-7 lead.

Ripon booted a field goal at the end of the half to come within nine. The Red Hawks rallied in the second half, scoring seven points in the third quarter and six in the fourth to come away with the win.

Grinnell entertains Beloit College at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Springer Field. A GC Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony is set for halftime.
