Grinnell football team starts quickly before falling to Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College started quickly, but Beloit College rallied and held on during a scoreless second half to earn a 16-7 Midwest Conference football win over the Pioneers Saturday at Rosenbloom Field.

After the teams traded possessions, Grinnell gave itself an advantage by forcing a fumble that Hugh Werner '25 recovered at the Beloit 32-yard line.

Grinnell (0-3, 0-2 MWC) then put together a seven-play drive that included key rushes by Lucky Carton '27, Sam Eaton '27 and Marcus Sung '28 as well as a 9-yard pass from Henry Baird '25 to Garrett Wilson '25.

Facing second-and-goal from deep in Beloit territory, Baird connected with Nick Rhinehart '25 on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Rhinehart's extra point made it 7-0 with 6:29 remaining.

Beloit (1-2, 1-1 MWC) tied the game late in the first period and got a safety and touchdown in the second frame for a 16-7 halftime lead.

The Pioneers drove deep into Beloit territory numerous more times, but were kept out of the end zone.

Grinnell, which had one more first down than Beloit and owned nearly a 10-minute edge in time of possession, saw Baird complete 22-of-39 passes for 94 yards. Rhinehart was his top receiver, catching 10 passes for 24 yards. Eaton was the top rusher with 49 yards.

Defensively, Werner made 14 tackles, while Keaton Fitzgerald '26, Danny Quirk '25 and Peyton Williams '27 all had six.

Grinnell has a bye next Saturday and plays Lawrence University on Oct. 5 in Appleton, Wis.
