Grinnell football team gets out to quick start, but Lyon rallies for season-opening victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Anxious to compete after a lengthy off-season, Grinnell College's football team was on fire at the start of Saturday afternoon's contest against Lyon College.

Henry Baird '25 marched the team directly down the field for a touchdown on the opening drive as the Pioneers bolted to a 21-12 halftime lead at Rosenbloom Field. However, the visitors responded with 36 second-half points to rally for a 48-28 victory in the season opener for both teams.

Baird completed 30-of-48 passes for 341 yards, the highest yardage total for a Pioneer QB since Sam Poulos went for 363 in 2013.

Garrett Wilson '25 led the team in receiving yards with 100 yards on four aerials. Lucky Carton '27 had 10 catches for 73 yards, while Noah Smith '27 and Nick Rhinehart '25 had 66 and 65 yards, respectively.

Sam Eaton '27 led the rushing attack with 53 yards.

All-everything defender Hugh Werner '25 tallied 10 tackles, Kevin Johanson '26 had seven stops and Alex Smith '27 tallied six. Coming up with five tackles were Luke Stefan '25 and Peyton Williams '27.

Grinnell took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in 11 plays, with Baird's 21-yard pass to Rhinehart serving as a key play. The Pioneers scored at the 9:25 mark when Baird hit Noah Smith with a 19-yard scoring strike. Rhinehart had the kick after.

Lyon scored midway through the second period to come within 7-6, but Grinnell bounced right back with a 66-yard TD pass from Baird to Wilson at the 5:11 mark. Again, Rhinehart had the point after.

Lyon followed with a scoring drive before Grinnell struck again, this time a 32-yard TD pass from Baird to Carton. Rhinehart's point after made it 21-12 at halftime.

The Scots put together a huge third quarter with 16 points to take a 28-21 lead entering the final frame.

After Lyon upped its margin to 41-21 early in the fourth, Grinnell put together a six-play, 75-yard series. Eaton had a 3-yard run and Carton a 13-yarder before Baird hit Carton with a 3-yard TD pass. Rhinehart's extra point made it 41-28 with 8:56 left.

Lyon held on the rest of the way and scored in the waning seconds to win by 20.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play next Saturday at Ripon College.
