Malcolm J. Gibson joins Grinnell football team as Offensive Coordinator

GRINNELL, Iowa - Malcolm J. Gibson, who has enjoyed a successful coaching run as assistant football coach at Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va., is coming to Grinnell College as the Pioneers' new offensive coordinator.

In just two seasons as the Generals' Pass Game Coordinator/Running Backs and Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Assistant, Gibson has coached two D3football.com All-Region selections, four Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honorees, a league Rookie of the Year and a rusher with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

The Generals also won the Cape Charles Bowl last season, the first-ever postseason win in school history, with a running back selected as game MVP.

Prior to Washington and Lee, Gibson served as assistant coach at Salisbury University where he helped the squad to three New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) titles. The team averaged 324.2 yards per game in 2021 and 325.4 in 2022, both third-best at the NCAA Division III level. Salisbury went 19-4 overall and 14-0 in the NJAC during his time coaching the squad.

As a player, Gibson was a member of conference championship teams at both Coe College and Salisbury. Coe made it to the second round of the NCAA D-III playoffs in that span and Salisbury advanced to the quarterfinals.

"I am so excited to be bringing Malcolm Gibson onboard as Grinnell's new Offensive Coordinator," said Grinnell Coach Brent Barnes. "His knowledge of the game, ideas brought forth during the interview process and recruiting ability will be a great addition to our team and program."

"I am looking forward to the opportunity at Grinnell College and joining the program led by Coach Barnes," added Gibson. "Returning to Iowa feels like a full-circle moment; it is exciting to have this opportunity entrusted to me by (Director of Athletics and Recreation) Holly Roepke and the entire Grinnell Athletic Department. Grinnell is an exciting space with opportunities for our athletes on and off the field and I look forward to adding to the student-athlete experience. Looking forward to getting to work…. Go Pioneers!"
