Grinnell men's cross country team has strong finish in loaded field at Central

PELLA, Iowa - Battling in a tough field at the Central Dutch Invitational, Grinnell College's men's cross country team came up with a strong performance Friday afternoon.


The regionally-ranked Pioneers were fourth of 10 teams, finishing behind only two other regionally-ranked teams and a nationally-rated junior college program.

Grinnell finished with 85 points, 19 behind Des Moines Area Community College. The Bears are ranked seventh in the Division II national JUCO list. The host school won the meet with 35 points and Simpson College placed second with 47. Both are listed in the NCAA Division III Midwest Region rankings along with Grinnell.

Ben Abelow '28 led the charge for Grinnell, placing fifth of 113 runners. He ran the 8-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 43.2 seconds. Two first-years, Jack Lakin '29 and Sebastian Vilches '29, were next in line for Grinnell as they were 15th in 27:31.6 and 20th in 27:45.2, respectively. Greyson Imm '28 was 21st in 27:47.4 and Connor Heagy '26 took 24th in 28:06.8 to round out Grinnell's list of scorers.

Also for the Pioneers, Leif Dahl '29 placed 27th in 28:14.1 and David In '28 was 30th in 28:22.6. The individual champ was James Johnson of Simpson, who ran 25:57.3.

Grinnell will compete in the Wartburg Regional Preview next Saturday.
