School-record performance boosts Grinnell women into opening-day lead at MWC Outdoor Championships

Schwartzman shatters school mark in javelin

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - With the help of Juniper Schwartzman's '27 school-record performance in the javelin, Grinnell College's women's track and field squad has bolted out to the opening-day lead at the 2026 Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships.

Schwartzman uncorked a throw of 41.23 meters at the Cornell College facility, shattering the school record of 39.83 meters established in 2019 by Cara Bresnahan. That toss ranks 25th at the NCAA Division III level this season and was good for second place at the meet.

Schwartzman wasn't done, though, also placing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 11.39 meters. That ranks eighth in GC history.

The Pioneers, who are the defending champs at the MWC Indoor Championships, are at 45 points and 10 in front of runner-up Ripon College.

Grinnell went 3-5-7 in the long jump as Lily Mayo '28 leaped 5.19 meters, third-best in GC history, Rajanea Landers '28 went 5.15 meters and Steph Kama-Kama '28 leaped 4.92 meters.

The Pioneers also fared well in the 1500, led by Hannah Roark's '26 fourth-place finish in 4 minutes, 46.18 seconds. Morgan Karow '26 was fifth in 4:46.51, Hannah Roth '27 took sixth in 4:47.23 and Cindy Wang '28 was eighth in 4:56.41. Roth's time ranks seventh all-time at GC.

In the 10,000, Ella McEntee '29 and Talia Harrison '26 were fourth and fifth in 40:34.43 and 40:46.40, respectively.

Jessie Goodman '26 and Mayo qualified fourth and eighth for the 100 hurdle finals with prelim times of 16.13 and 18.01, while Kate Solano '29 and Emily Summers '29 qualified fifth and sixth in the 400 prelims in 1:00.83 and 1:01.10.

In the 100 prelims, Keelin Swisher '29 and Landers qualified sixth and seventh in 12.68 and 12.76, while Goodman and Tennyson Shultz '28 were fifth and seventh in the 400 hurdle prelims in 1:09.31 and 1:11.15. Swisher ran 26.81 in the 200 prelims, which qualified eighth.

The meet wraps up on Saturday.
