Grinnell women's track and field team races to first MWC outdoor title in 41 years

Pioneers complete season "triple crown"

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - It was a case of deja vu for the Grinnell College women's track and field team Saturday.

Two months after claiming their first Midwest Conference indoor title in 41 years, the Pioneers won their first outdoor championship in the same time frame.

Grinnell rolled up its first outdoor crown since 1985 with a spectacular display of depth and balance, winning just two event titles but placing high in most.

staffThe Pioneers piled up 178 points to beat runner-up Illinois College by 18. The title completed a "triple crown" of sorts for Grinnell, as the Pioneers also won the league cross country championship last fall. That marks the sixth time in MWC history a women's team has won the cross country and both track crowns in the same academic year, and the first time Grinnell has achieved the feat.

Grinnell's Jeff Pedersen and the Pioneer staff were named MWC Coaching Staff of the Year, an honor they also won at the league indoor event. The staff includes Sarah Burnell, Keegan Parrott, Andrew Nickeson and Jermelle Lewis.

Hannah Roth '27 was one of Grinnell's event champs, defending her league title in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11 minutes, 18.92 seconds. Grinnell had a strong showing in that event, as Ella McEntee '29, Emma Wharton-Hsieh '27 and Julia Toro '29 were fourth through sixth in 11:52.44, 11:59.09 and 12:07.73, respectively. McEntee's time ranks ninth in GC history.

Rajanea Landers '28 won her third MWC triple jump crown, and second outdoors, with a leap of 11.04 meters. That ranks third in GC history. Also in that event, Steph Kama-Kama '28 was second at 10.94 meters and Kate Solano '29 was fifth at 10.21 meters. Kama-Kama's jump ranks fourth in GC history and Solano's is eighth.

Kylie Galowitz '26 was second in the hammer with a toss of 46.26 meters, second all-time at GC. Also in that event, Juniper Schwartzman '27 threw 40.11 meters, fifth in GC history, and Marlowe Hurst's 28 throw of 34.93 meters is eighth all-time.

Galowitz added a third-place finish in the discus with a toss of 37.37 meters, while Kirsten Kelly '29, Lily Mayo '28 and Kama-Kama placed fourth, fifth and seventh in the high jump with leaps of 1.53, 1.48 and 1.48 meters.

The 4x100 relay team of Keelin Swisher '29, Solano, Mayo and Landers was second in 49.52, fourth all-time at GC, while the 4x400 relay unit of Emily Summers '29, Hannah Roark '26, Noelle Vu '28 and Solano took third in 4:09.58.

Roark, Sindri Bonner '28 and Tennyson Shultz '28 were third, fifth and eighth in the 800 in 2:18.76, 2:22.23 and 2:26.64, while Morgan Karow '26, Talia Harrison '26 and Arushi Kharbanda '29 finished third, sixth and eighth in the 5000 in 17:52.57, 18:31.56 and 18:47.71.

Jessie Goodman '26 was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.47, which ranks third in GC history, and fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.26. Mayo was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.08, ninth all-time, and Shultz was eighth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:17.70.

Solano and Summers were fifth and sixth in the 400 in 1:01.78 and 1:02.47. Swisher was fifth in both the 100 and 200 in 12.59 and 26.12, with the latter time ranking seventh in program history. Landers added an eighth-place finish in the 100 in 13.04.
