Box Score OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team lost a three-set non-conference contest to William Penn University Wednesday night.
William Penn, now 21-9, won by scores of 25-17, 29-27 and 25-13. Grinnell is now 4-19.
Bethine Moore '13 had a double-double for Grinnell with 26 assists and 10 digs while also hitting .429 with three kills in seven attempts with no errors.
Cheyenne Hickox '15 led the Pioneers in kills with 14 while also tallying three total blocks and hitting .286.
Claire Weidman '15 and
Natalie Duncombe '15 had seven and six kills, respectively. Weidman also had two aces, while Duncombe and
Michelle Briggs '13 came up with four blocks each.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 added 10 digs and
Shelby Carroll '13 contributed two blocks.
The first set was tied at 10-all before the hosts went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. It looked as if the Statesmen would take the second set easily, too, after breaking out to a 17-12 edge.
However, Grinnell roared back and eventually tied it at 20-all on Moore's serve and even went ahead 21-20. That was followed by three ties before Grinnell reached set point when Weidman's kill made it 24-23.
The Pioneers were at set point again later as another kill by Weidman made it 26-25, but that was followed by two more deadlocks before William Penn won by two.
The third set saw Grinnell trailing just 11-7 after Briggs' kill before the hosts went on a 7-2 run to pull away for good.
Grinnell hosts Illinois College in Midwest Conference play Saturday. Action at Darby Gymnasium begins at 11 a.m.
