Hickox shatters MWC hitting record to lead Pioneers to 3-set victory

Box Score BELOIT, Wis. – Grinnell College's Cheyenne Hickox '15 shattered a Midwest Conference record while leading the Pioneers' volleyball team to a three-set shutout victory at Beloit College Saturday.

Hickox compiled an attack efficiency of .933, recording 14 kills on 15 attempts with no errors. That easily surpasses the previous league mark of .871 established by Lis Pollock of Lawrence University in a 2002 match.

Additionally, the percentage is just shy of the NCAA Division III national record of .941 set in 1991 by Steph Pearson of Gustavus Adolphus.

The Pioneers, who improved to 2-3 in the Midwest Conference and 4-18 overall, won by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 26-24. Beloit fell to 0-4 in the MWC and 2-17 in all matches.

Grinnell hit.360 as a team as Claire Weidman '15 had 12 kills and Michelle Briggs '13 tallied nine. Briggs also had four blocks, while Hickox and Natalie Duncombe '15 added three apiece.

Bethine Moore '13 dished out 35 assists, Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had 20 digs and served four aces and Sydney McClendon '16 had two service aces.

Grinnell led just 11-9 in the first set before going on a key 5-1 run that included kills from Briggs, Weidman and Hickox. The Pioneers never looked back after that.

Grinnell got out to a 10-2 lead in the second set before the hosts rallied, closing the gap to 11-9. However, the Pioneers answered with an 8-1 run to pull away as Moore served two points and Emma Knatterud-Johnson '15 added a four-point run.

Beloit led the third set 22-20 before a service error and three service points by Knatterud-Johnson put Grinnell ahead 24-22.

Beloit came back with two points, but Briggs recorded a kill to put the Pioneers up by a point and Hickox fittingly finished off the match with a kill.

Grinnell steps out of MWC play Wednesday with a contest at William Penn University in Oskaloosa. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
