Pioneer men's soccer team set for MWC Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – With a trio of victories in “must-win” situations over the past few weekends, the Grinnell College men's soccer team has propelled itself into the Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Pioneers are seeded fourth in the event at 6-4 in the league standings and 9-7-1 overall. They will play top-seed and tourney host Lake Forest College at 2 p.m. Friday. The Foresters, ranked 10th in the North Region, come into the contest at 9-1 in the MWC and 14-3-1 overall.

Grinnell comes into the game ranked fourth in the league in both goals per contest (1.88) and goals allowed (1.29). Joseph Brown '15 is tops on the team in goals with 12, third-best in the MWC. He also has four assists.

Elliot Meyer '15 and Victor Ghazal '16 have four goals each and Pun Winichakul '13 has three. Benjamin Warner '15 is tops on the team in assists with six.

Keeper Isaiah Tyree '15, this week's MWC Defensive Performer of the Week, has a 1.28 goals against average and .786 saves percentage. He has three shutouts on the year.

Grinnell and Lake Forest met Sept. 15 on the latter's field, with the Foresters eking out a 1-0 victory.

Lake Forest leads the conference in goals with 2.89 a game and is second in goals allowed at 0.78.

Mahir Mameledzija has been an offensive force for the Foresters, leading the league in goals with 27. Teammate Steven Johnson is tied for the conference lead in assists with seven, while Alexi Spiratos is tied for fourth with six. Dylan Hartman is tied for eighth in goals with six.

Friday's semifinal round winner will meet either Carroll University or Beloit College at 2 p.m. Saturday for the title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
