Pioneers clip Ripon in overtime, move to 2-0 in MWC play for 1st time since 1992-93

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – After a fast, furious and exciting Midwest Conference basketball game with Ripon College Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium, the Grinnell College women's team found itself with something it hadn't had in two decades.

A 2-0 record in league play.

Grinnell outlasted Ripon 57-56 in double overtime to move to 2-0 in the MWC, a feat not accomplished since the 1992-93 campaign.

Michelle Briggs '13 had yet another double-double for the Pioneers, recording team-highs of 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also blocked four shots and came up with three steals.

Rebecca DeGroot added 14 points for the Pioneers, who are 2-2 overall, and Cristal Coleman '15 came up with 10 points and three steals. Alissa Hirsh '16 added five assists.

Jill Van Eperen had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Hawks, who fell to 1-1 in the MWC and 2-3 overall.

The Pioneers trailed by as many as seven in the first half before rallying within 26-24 by halftime. Ripon took off again and was ahead by seven with 3:29 remaining.

However, Anne Boldt '16 hit a jumper and DeGroot drained a 3-pointer to make it a two-point gap with :48 left.

After Ripon hit two free throws, Boldt followed with three of her own to bring Grinnell within 45-44 with :33 remaining.

After a turnover by the visitors, DeGroot took a nice pass from Briggs and scored on a layup to put the hosts ahead 46-45 with :13 left. DeGroot added a free throw 9 seconds later to make it 47-45, but Ripon scored at the buzzer to force overtime.

Ripon led the entire first overtime before Tolu Alabi's '13 free throw with :11 left tied the game at 51-all to force a second extra period.

There were two more ties before Briggs' free throw with 1:51 left made it a 55-54 Grinnell lead. Erin Lind followed with a bucket for Ripon, only to see Briggs score on a jumper at the 1:03 mark to put the Pioneers ahead by what turned out to be the final margin.

Ripon missed a jumper at the :36 mark and later got the ball back, but failed to get a shot off before the final buzzer as Grinnell's players and fans erupted in celebration.

Grinnell is on the road Sunday to meet Wartburg College at 2 p.m. and then Tuesday for a 5 p.m. meeting with Monmouth College.
