Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak in a big way Tuesday, rolling past Illinois College 67-50 at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers, 3-2 in the Midwest Conference and 4-4 in all games, got a game-high 18 points from
Tolu Alabi '13, who also had nine boards and three steals.
Alissa Hirsh '16 added 15 points and six assists,
Michelle Briggs '13 grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds while blocking four shots and
Cristal Coleman '15 had three steals.
Tiffany King had 14 points for the Lady Blues, who fell to 3-2 in the league and 4-4 in all games.
Grinnell never trailed in the game, which was close before a run late in the first half helped the Pioneers pull away. Leading just 20-18, Grinnell erupted for 10 of the next 12 points to lead 30-20 with 1:38 left.
Abby Jaeger '14 opened the run with a jumper, Alabi added a basket and three free throw shots and Annie Boldt '16 drained a 3-pointer.
The Pioneers led 31-20 at halftime and were ahead the entire second half. The dagger came when, leading by seven with 9:49 left, Grinnell went on a critical five-point run as Coleman and Alabi each hit jumpers and Briggs drained a free throw to make it 50-38 with 7:57 left.
The Lady Blues never got within single digits again.
Grinnell concludes its pre-holiday break slate with a game against non-conference foe St. Ambrose University Saturday at Davenport. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
