Brown's hat trick sends Pioneer men's soccer team to season-opening win

Grinnell College's Joseph Brown '15 (white uniform) scores one of his three goals against Coe College on Friday.
Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa –  The 2012 season couldn't have gotten off to a better start for the Grinnell College men's soccer team.

Joseph Brown '15 recorded a hat trick and the Pioneers cruised to a 5-1 victory over Coe College Friday at Springer Field.

Also getting goals for the Pioneers, who led 4-0 not even 24 minutes into the game, were Pun Winichakul '13 and Benjamin Charney '15. Isaiah Tyree '15 recorded nine saves to earn his second career win at keeper.

Brown opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Reed Caron '13 began things by sending the ball to Brown to chase down. After Brown's defender was unable to clear the ball, Brown dribbled past the final defenseman and booted a hard shot past the keeper.

Winichakul got into the scoring act in the 15th minute as he picked off a Kohawk pass, took one dribble and fired a shot that deflected off the keeper's hands and into the goal.

In the 18th minute, it was Brown again on the scoring attack. Lars Olsen '15 created the goal on a strong clearing pass. Brown fought off his defender and put in his second goal of the game.

In the 23rd minute, Charney fought off two defenders deep in Kohawk territory. After a short scuffle, Charney came up with the ball and sent it into the top part of the net to make it 4-0.

The score remained 4-0 through halftime and into the 72nd minute when Brown delivered again. This time, he was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in the box and delivered with no problem to make it 5-0 and secure his hat trick.

Coe added a goal in the 75th minute to conclude the scoring.

Grinnell won the shots battle 17-14, with Brown and Connor Ward '15 taking three shots each and Winichakul, Omeed Kashef '14 and Charney getting two apiece.

The Pioneers return to Springer Field on Sunday to face Central College. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
