Pioneer men's soccer team rallies for 2-2 tie

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa –  The Grinnell College men's soccer team rallied for a thrilling 2-2 overtime tie with Central College Sunday afternoon at Springer Field.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Omeed Kashef '14 connected on his first goal of the season. On the play, Kashef got the ball a little ways outside the box. He then fired a powerful shot to the top left edge of the post past a diving Central keeper.

However, Central added a goal in the 13th minute by Matt Woodcock and scored again in the 23rd minute on a goal by Brandon Bautista to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

It remained that way until the 74th minute when Reed Caron '13 found the back of the net for his first goal of the 2012 campaign. Joseph Brown '15, who on Friday scored three goals, began this play when he crossed the ball from the left side of the field to Caron who was outside the box in the middle of the field. He struck the ball to the top part of the goal for the score. It was Brown's first assist of the season.

Regulation ended at 2-2, as did both overtimes. Grinnell keeper Isaiah Tyree finished with five saves on the day.

Grinnell tallied 10 shots in the game, with Brown coming up with three and Kashef and Michael Hurley '16 a pair each.

Grinnell is now 1-0-1 on the season, while Central fell to 0-1-1. The Pioneers' next contest is against another Iowa Conference foe, Simpson College, on Wednesday at Springer Field. Action begins at 5 p.m.
