Grinnell men's soccer team topples IC to snap 4-game skid

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, toppling Illinois College 2-1 in Midwest Conference action at Springer Field.

The Pioneers got all the goals they needed in the final four minutes of the first half, as Benjamin Warner '15 scored in the 41st minute and Joseph Brown '15 in the 44th minute.

The win is Grinnell's first in MWC play as the Pioneers improved to 1-2 while moving to 2-4-1 overall. Illinois College fell to 0-2-1 in the league and 5-3-2 in all games.

Illinois College opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a goal by Fiifi Nkum.

It remained a 1-0 game until Warner was awarded a penalty kick, which he played to the right side of the goal for the score. It was his first goal of the season.

Then, with just 46 seconds left before half, the Pioneers were awarded a free kick. Warner took the kick and passed to Brown, who struck the ball hard to the side of the net where the keeper had no chance to stop it.

It was Brown's team-high fourth goal of the season and Warner's first assist.

The second half was scoreless as the Pioneers hung on for the win. Grinnell won the shots battle 15-8, with Brown and Michael Hurley '16 getting four shots apiece and Benjamin Charney '15 taking two.  Getting one shot apiece were Victor Ghazal '16, Elliot Meyer '15, Rockne Decoster '15, Omeed Kashef '14 and Warner.

Keeper Isaiah Tyree '15 had four saves in earning the victory.

Grinnell is back in action Sunday with a game against Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Action begins at 1 p.m.
