Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team knew Knox College was coming to Springer Field on Saturday riding high with enthusiasm after some recent success.
But the Pioneers squelched any hopes by the Prairie Fire by scoring three goals in the first 28 minutes en route to a 4-1 Midwest Conference victory.
Elliot Meyer '15 had two goals, his first two of the season, as the Pioneers won their second straight league game to improve to 2-2 in the MWC and 4-5-1 overall. Knox dipped to 1-2-1 in the MWC and 5-4-1 in all games.
Joseph Brown '15 opened the scoring in the 17th minute for his team-leading fifth goal. On the play, he got the ball in the middle of the field just inside of the box. He balanced and struck to the right side of the post for the score.
Victor Ghazal '16 scored his second goal of the season in the 25th minute. It began with a corner that was deflected by a Knox defender, only to see Ghazal get it and smash it into the top of the net.
Meyer added a goal in the 28th minute on an assist by Ghazal, his first of the year. Ghazal got the ball at the right side of the field and found Meyer in the box, right in the middle. Meyer hit it to the left side of the post for the goal.
The Pioneers' 3-0 halftime lead was increased to 4-0 in the 64th minute with another goal by Meyer. Brown crossed the ball on the play but Knox's keeper deflected it. However, Meyer was there and fired it to the post for the score.
Knox got a goal in the 80th minute to conclude the scoring.
Grinnell won the shots battle 17-4, with Brown and Meyer taking four shots each and
Benjamin Charney '15 and Ghazal two apiece.
