Grinnell wins 3rd consecutive MWC game by shutting out Rams

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team stretched its Midwest Conference winning streak to three games Sunday afternoon by blanking Cornell College 4-0 at Springer Field.

Joseph Brown '15 scored two goals, his team-leading sixth and seventh of the season, as the Pioneers improved to 3-2 in the league and 5-5-1 in all contests. Cornell fell to 0-5 in the MWC and 0-11 in all games.

Pun Winichakul '13 opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a double assist by Brown and Benjamin Warner '15. Warner delivered a free kick to Brown, who got the ball at the right side of the box. Brown then sent the ball to a moving Winichakul, who tapped it into the post for the goal.

It remained 1-0 through halftime before Benjamin Charney '15 scored his second goal of the season in the 57th minute on an assist by Reed Caron '13. Caron made a good run with the ball after receiving it from Brown. From the right side of the field, Caron found Charney in the middle. Charney got the ball and smashed it into the top of the net for the score.

Brown scored in the 64th minute on an assist by Lars Olsen '15. Olsen took a free kick and found Brown at the right side of the box, who headed it into the goal.

In the 70th minute, Brown scored for the second time on an assist by Elliot Meyer '15. Meyer was in the middle of the field and gave a through ball to Brown, who overtook his defender and struck the ball to the right side of the post where the keeper had no chance to stop the goal.

Grinnell keeper Isaiah Tyree '15 recorded one save for his second shutout of the season.

The Pioneers outshot Cornell 22-3, with Brown taking five shots and Charney four. Michael Hurley '16 had three shots and Caron, Victor Ghazal '16 and Omeed Kashef '14 two apiece.

Grinnell's next action is this coming Saturday at Beloit College. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
