Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference preseason co-favorite Illinois College Blueboys posted a 53-20 victory over Grinnell College in football action Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.
The winners broke out to a 23-7 halftime lead as they improved to 2-0 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Pioneers fell to 0-2 and 0-1.
The Blueboys, who piled up 722 total yards including 580 through the air, led 9-0 after one period thanks to a touchdown and safety and added another score in the second period for a 16-0 edge before Grinnell got on the board.
The Pioneers' scoring drive, which covered 81 yards on 11 plays, included a 12-yard rush by
TJ Schaid '13, a 12-yard rush by
Barrett Morrissette '165 and a 13-yard pass from
Sam Poulos '16 to
Cody Weber '13. The drive was capped by Schaid's 1-yard TD run with 8:22 left in the second period.
Daniel Munger '15 kicked the point after.
The Blueboys came back with another TD for a 23-7 halftime lead, and scored twice early in the third period for a 37-7 edge. That's when the Pioneers went to work again, engineering a nine-play, 51-yard scoring drive.
Poulos began the series with a 28-yard completion to Weber, and later hit
Jayson Campos '14 with an 8-yard strike. The drive was capped by a 14-yard scoring toss from Poulos to Weber with 4:15 left in the period. The two-point try was no good, leaving the score at 37-13 by the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the visitors scored for a 44-13 lead before Grinnell responded with a defensive touchdown. Two plays after a Pioneer punt, Blueboy quarterback Michael Bates delivered a pass only to have it picked out of the air by linebacker
Colton Feller '14 at the 50-yard line.
Feller promptly took off for the end zone, beating a few potential tacklers down the field for the score. Munger's extra point made it 44-20 with 7:08 remaining.
The Blueboys managed another touchdown and their second safety of the game following Feller's score to account for the final margin.
Poulos completed 18-of-31 passes for 135 yards, while Weber had six catches for 80 yards. Defensively,
David Ternes '15 had 11 tackles,
Max Keller '14 added eight and
Kevin Hwang '14 and
John Mertes '15 had seven apiece.
Besides Feller,
Andrew Clark '14 also had an interception.
Grinnell is back at home for the third Saturday in a row next week when Lake Forest College visits Rosenbloom Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
