Pioneers complete regular-season sweep of Lady Blues

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Alissa Hirsh '16 erupted for a game-high 26 points and Tolu Alabi '13 added 20 to send Grinnell College past Illinois College 71-68 in Midwest Conference women's basketball play Tuesday.

The victory completed a season sweep of the Lady Blues by the Pioneers, who moved to 6-4 in the MWC and 7-7 overall.

Hirsh also had game-highs of seven rebounds and five steals for the Pioneers, while Alabi reached the 500-point milestone for her career during the contest.

Also scoring in double digits for Grinnell was Michelle Briggs '13 with 12 points. Briggs also blocked eight shots and grabbed seven rebounds.  Elizabeth Burnett '13 added seven rebounds, Alabi and Anne Boldt '16 dished out three assists each and Boldt had five steals.

Tiffany King had 20 points for the Lady Blues, who fell to 3-7 in the league and 5-10 in all contests.

Grinnell got out to a quick start and led by as many as nine when Alabi's traditional three-point play made it 13-4 with 14:18 left in the first half. However, the hosts roared back and eventually took the lead.

The Lady Blues were ahead 32-30 with 2:36 left when Abby Jaeger '14 hit a jumper, Alabi sank a pair of shots and Hirsh made two free throws to make it a 38-32 Grinnell lead with :51 left. The Pioneers went into the locker room leading 40-34.

Grinnell led by just two early in the second half before a small run gave the visitors some breathing room. Hirsh began things with a jumper, Alabi followed with a layup and Alabi then hit another layup to make it 48-40 with 15:52 left.

The Pioneers never relinquished control, but Illinois College made a late run and came within a point with 8 seconds left. Hirsh calmly sank two free throws to make it a three-point lead, and Illinois College answered with one charity shot a few seconds later.

Alabi was fouled with 2 ticks left on the clock and made one of two free throws to put the Pioneers ahead 71-68. The Lady Blues then missed a last-second jumper as the Pioneers came away with the three-point win.

Grinnell plays a MWC contest at Ripon College on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
