Big-time performances send Pioneer women past Knox

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Big-time performances by a number of players paved the way for the Grinnell College women's basketball team in a 94-75 victory over Knox College Tuesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Tolu Alabi '13 and Michelle Briggs '13 recorded their second double-doubles in as many games, as Alabi had a game-high 27 points to go along with 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals. Briggs added 15 points and 16 boards while also blocking five shots and recording two steals.

Alissa Hirsh '16 not only had 17 points, but displayed a big-time passing performance with nine assists and no turnovers. She also had two steals.

Anne Boldt '16 was also in double figures for scoring with 10 points, Cristal Coleman '15 had seven assists – all in the second half – and Abby Jaeger '14 came up with two steals.

The Pioneers, who remained tied for fifth in the Midwest Conference at 8-6 while owning a 9-9 overall mark, saw 11 players find the scoring column while shooting 58.6 percent (41-of-70) from the field.

Jessica Howard had 15 points for the Prairie Fire, who fell to 5-8 in the league and 7-11 in all games.

A big run in the first half helped the Pioneers put some distance between themselves and the visitors. With the game tied at 8-all, Grinnell reeled off 16 unanswered points. Alabi began the spurt with two baskets, Briggs added another and then Alabi scored again to make it 16-8.

Kelly Clarke '13 then contributed a layup, Hirsh made two shots in a row and Karen Gogins '13 scored for a 24-8 Pioneer lead with 11:18 to go in the first half.

Grinnell continued to keep command, leading 40-27 at halftime. Knox crept within eight early in the second half, but the Pioneers answered back as Alabi made a layup and free throw, Hirsh hit a jumper and Boldt connected on another basket to put the hosts up 47-32 with 15:46 remaining.

Knox never got within single digits again.

The Pioneers are on the road Saturday, playing at Beloit College in a 1 p.m. matchup.
